Rugged case
Olin Colin M Shapiro, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto in Canada, conducted a case study [1]. The researchers focused on 11 cases of sexual behavior during sleep. Compared to ordinary sleepwalking, "sexsomnia" has some unique attributes, such as a more pronounced unconscious arousal, movement is more restricted and more specific, and there are specific dreams.

For example, a bodyguard's wife accused her husband of having sex with her repeatedly at night regardless of her wishes, but couldn't remember anything when she got up the next morning. There is also a female announcer. Her husband is often awakened in the middle of the night. Although the term "sexsomnia" is not very common and there were only 11 cases in this study, the researchers tried to find some commonalities. For example, these cases have had abnormalities in sleeping, and several ancestors also have abnormalities in sleeping. There are also several cases with a history of drinking and peony.
Is "sexsomnia" rare?
11 cases are obviously a little rare, but researchers certainly don't stop there. Shapiro and colleagues at the University of Toronto published a survey based on Internet questionnaires in 2007 [2]. They surveyed 832 participants, 7.6% of whom had "sexsomnia", and the proportion of males was higher (11% of male participants and 4% of female participants). It should be noted that these people have sought the help of a doctor due to sleep disorders and therefore cannot represent the general population.
Researchers also found that although patients with "sexsomnia" and people with general sleep disorders have used illegal drugs, the proportion of this population is 15.9% of those with "dreamers" and that only 7.7%, the researchers, therefore, concluded that the phenomenon of "sexsomnia" may be related to drug abuse. Other than that, patients with "sexsomnia" were not significantly different from those with general sleep disorders in terms of fatigue and depression.
Researchers also believe that they may have underestimated the number of "sexsomnia" patients because patients rarely talk to doctors about this during treatment. Of the 63 "sexsomnia" patients found through a questionnaire survey, only 4 had mentioned "sexsomnia" with their doctors. It can be seen that the number of "sexsomnia" patients is likely to be underestimated.
However, the determination of "sexsomnia" requires careful consideration. Some lawyers have successfully won a lawsuit to acquit the defendant on the grounds that the male defendant was a "sexsomnia" patient.
